Who might need a crown?

What can crowns be made of?
The material that your dentist chooses for your crown will very much depend on your own individual needs. Crowns can be made from metal, resin, and ceramic.
How will my mouth be prepared for a crown?
If you’ve been told you need a crown, you will first be x-rayed, so that the roots of your teeth and the surrounding bone can be checked. This may make a difference with regards to whether a crown would be the best choice for you or not.
Before your dentist starts doing anything, you will be given anaesthetic, which will ensure that you don’t feel pain before the process. Then, we will shape your tooth so that the crown can fit nicely on top later on in the process. This process may differ from patient to patient, as the shaping that needs to be done depends on the state of the tooth at the start of the procedure.
Then, we will make an impression of your tooth, and from this, we will be able to create your crown. You will be given a temporary crown in the meantime, which will be in place until your crown is ready to be fitted. Once it is ready, we will contact you and you will be invited into the surgery for the process to be completed.
How can I care for my crown?
Although you don’t need to do anything special for your crown specifically, you will need to ensure that you have a good dental routine in place. Just because you have a crown covering your tooth doesn’t mean that it’s immune from decay, meaning that you will still need to make sure that your mouth is taken care of. You should also use an antibacterial mouthwash, as this will stop infection from being a problem in the future.
How long will my crown last?
How long your crown lasts will depend very much on exactly how well you take care of it. Many patients find that their crowns last for 15 years or longer with dedicated care.
